New Years Day Run

Today was my public runing debut with the Brisbane Road Runners, I arrived there about 550am and registered, the 10k runners had been called to the start as they usually start 30mins before the 5k, however it seemed pretty quite either the 5k runners hadn't arrived yet or there weren't any.

6am and the 10k started I was still standing on the side line and quickly decided to join them. The run was a 10k no watches run, where the competitors had to predict their time. The closest male and female to that time wins a prize. The course is very flat and is a 5k loop course, therefore 2 laps. My goal was to run 5k so I was only going to do 1 lap and pull out.

I joined the back of the pack and slowly worked my way through the back markers, by the 3 k mark I caught a smaller group and joined the back of the them. I was feeling pretty good, my leg was going ok and I was doing a pretty comfortable pace.

At the 3.5 k mark I caught up to a person wearing a cool running hat, on the back of the hat it said Tesso. I introduced myself, I have been reading Tesso's blog among others for a while and it was good to finally meet her in person. We got talking, which continued for the remainder of the run.

That's right, the remainder, I ran the whole 10k, so much for the 5k goal. It made it much easier having someone there next to me, talking etc, it actually made the distance pass quicker. I had no idea about the pace that we were running but Tesso's predicted time was 52.56.

The last Km I was starting to struggle abit, I don't think the pace slowed but it definently didn't get any faster. We ending up crossing the line together in a time of 49.06. So much for the prediction, sorry my fault :)

After the run I met a few other people, some I think are bloggers others make an appearance on the CR website. I was introduced to Nick ( Tesso's Kurrawa partner), Liz (Lizzle) and Eddie, I met a few others but sorry I forget, Ross and Steve I think??

The presentations started for the predicted times and a few luck draw prizes. For the male prize, Robbie picked his time spot on (42 mins) and Liz was a few seconds out for the female. They both won timex watches. The lucky draw prizes were drawn and Tesso's name was pulled in which she scored some BRRC running gear and then Claire who was the first female runner across the line won the other prize. So out of the group I was standing with 3 prizes were won, which was pretty good, however the males did seem to get the raw deal :)

I arrived home, feeling left out from not winning a prize, I checked my Lotto ticket and won $155. I can't complain about the day, I suceeded in my running debut by doubling my goal, met some nice people and won some money. Awesome.

Until next time.....

Woohoo - $155!!! I'd gladly trade you my new BRRC crop top for that ;-)

Thanks so much for the run yesterday. I really was pleased to go so far under my prediction, and the further the better.

I'm glad you enjoyed it out there and that the knee behaved itself. Hopefully see you at the next one in two weeks. Though the way you are recovering by then I reckon I'll just be getting a back view :-)
