What tha!

Yseterday was the monthly 5k TT which was handicapped apparently for the first time in years. As I hadn't posted a time since Novembers TT which was before my surgery that was the time they used to determine my position. I didn't really worry me, but I was damn sure that I wasn't going to run 18:30. I was handicapped 10:30 from the first person and there was about 4 others behind me. I set out, I was feeling ok but just couldn't get into a good stride it felt like I was taking baby steps. I ended up making the 2.5k turn around in 9:35 and caught the person that took off 30 secs before me. The return trip was a killer, the wind picked up coming straight in off the bay, I dont know if it was really that bad but I really felt terrible coming back. My paced slowed down considerably. One of the back markers caught me however no-one else caught up and I actually overtook a few more people. I ended up finishing in a time 19:47, over 4 min/k pace for the second half, but still managed to break 20min which is always my goal.

Just to back track for a moment I met two people that are doing the Caboolture run - 2 x 3hr relay, however they were not that keen on running the three hours. I was talking to Schultzy on thursday about how I should have tried to organise a relay. He mentioned this to them, they then said if I wanted to join them they will allow me to enter in the realy and make it 3 x 2hr which is great. So I am now running this Saturday in the Caboolture run, my first experience at something like this and in fact I dont even think that I have ever ran 2hrs before. It would be great to clock around 25k for the 2hrs but anything over 20k will be fine.

In saying that, today was one of the worst runs of my life, in fact it wasn't even a run more like a power walk. I entered my third run today with the BRR, the 15K, I done a little warm up and noticed for some reason my shins were sore again. After some stretching I lined up for the start, the gun went and instantly my legs felt bad, like yesterday i wasn't smooth, my stride was wrong and I didn't have that spring. I was in fact pounding into the pavement pretty hard which was causing my legs to hurt more. I passed the 1k in about 4:15 and was finding it hard to even put weight on my legs, it continually got worse and I started to slow down and by the 3k mark I was in a decent amount of pain. I passed the 3K mark in about 13:20, I tried many things along the way to try and make the pain disappear but nothing worked. By 3.5K I couldn't stand it and began walking. The pain didn't subside and got alot worse before it got better. I found it so hard to bear weight and the medial part of my lower shins are now very tender. Throughout today there has been a constant dull ache, I have been icing all day which makes it feel alot better. I have had shin splints before but never acute pain like that, you generally feel them coming and reduce your workload. I ran over 40K last week and have reduced this week. I have only done 2 runs including speed work this week with no pain and then today it hits. Very strange, to say the least, Im not happy about it and I think that maybe the shoes are the culprit. They are fine for grass surfaces but concrete etc, no good. It is just bad timing I now have entered a relay with 2 people who are now counting on me and now I will have a few days rest from running. Im hoping that this will disappear as quick as it came, so in the mean time I will cyle and do weights which will have to get me through the Caboolture relay.

Maybe 10 -15k will be more realistic :) The fact is our team is not entering to be competitive, I will just enjoy the night and take it from there.

Happy Training :)

Yesterday 5k
Today 3k
Month 78k
YTD 78k

Boy, talk about mixed emotions reading this post!

First up, that's a great comeback time for your 5k. Gotta be happy when you set a goal and achieve it.

I got soooooo excited when I read you had a spot in a team for Caboolture, but then came back to earth with a thud after reading about this morning's run :-(

Gees, I hope a few days rest gets things sorted out. It will be great to have you out there on Saturday night, even if you do have to take it easy. Ha ha, maybe we can stagger the odd lap together :-)

At least being part of it will give you a nice intro for a decent run there next year.

Take it easy. Fingers crossed all is okay.

I wondered what happened to you out there today. I just assumed you had overtaken me and was off in the distance and finished quickly :)

Sorry to hear about your race but I am glad you listened to common sense and pulled up.

Now on to the good news - yah! Will be so good to have you there on Saturday night. It really is going to be so much fun and you know what - you are allowed to walk whenever you want and because it is a track (as opposed to an out and back course) you don't feel bad walking as you are always with other people (ok so they might be lapping you....).
So don't fret about if you are 'up to it or not' because even a light jog and lots of walking is certainly permitted.

In the meantime sounds like you need some R&R and time to put your feet up.

First off, thanks for your advice re - my bad back problem - nothing serious I hope.

I've never done TT's (I'm assuming it means Time Trials). Your 5 km time is impressive and I gather you've got more in your tank. Reading yours and other blogs I might get down to a track and do a 5 k'er.

Sorry to hear about your shins and good news on your relay this coming weekend. Hope all goes well and the shins aren't a problem.

Thats an impressive 5kmTT! Sorry to hear about the shins - hope its nothing too serious and all goes well for the Caboolture Run this weekend. Who would have thought that Caboolture of all places would be the CR running hub of Australia this weekend? :)

I hope the shins recover for your adventure on Saturday, sounds like it will be a good night with lots of CRs and bloggers there to keep you company.

Take it easy for a few days and lots of ice. Also putting some anti-inflammatory gel on every night helps too, if you're not already doing it.
