Just Chill-n

It has been a pretty quite few days for me. After the Sunday 10k, I woke up feeling a little stiff on most parts of my legs. I was a little concerned that my knee looked a bit more swollen than before so I decided to do nothing on Monday.

Yesterday I woke up feeling alot better, the knee looked more normal, no more puffy than any other day. My wife, Cassandra and I decided the night before that we would go to the pool the next day. This is great exercise for pregnant women, and it will also give my legs another days rest. I decided to swim 20 laps (1k), and just broke these up into intervals depending on how I was feeling. Pretty much a junk session nothing really gained from it. However the water was nice and refreshing.

Last night I was doing some stretching, my knee has seemed to improve very slowly in regards to ROM. I think stretching needs to go hand in hand with strength work which is something I think I need to focus on more. I decided to look for my Swiss ball, I haven't used it very much so I went rummaging through boxes looking for it. I eventually found it, pumped it up, rolled it around, tormenting my dog for a while and then started doing some squats with it. There was quite a bit of discomfort doing this and I still need to use my good leg to support 80% of the weight to do this, but I think it will help. Slowly.

Today was another slow/lazy day, just doing some more squats. There has been no change when doing the squats from yesterday but I didn't expect this. I also found another activity that seems to work well. This is going to sound weird but I found a small bag with envelopes containing photos in it. I was sitting on the couch doing some small leg exercises and grabbed the bag which fits great over my foot. With the weight of the photos it gives my leg a good workout by doing leg extensions on the couch. The only problem is that the photos are ones from my wedding, not the professional ones, but the ones from the disposable cameras we had on the tables at the reception. Wife and weddings, bad Karma. Irrespective of the good that this important memorabilia is achieving I can see that it will not go down well. However I may be wrong, here's hoping.

Anyway, I dont have anything planned at this stage for the remainder of the week. I would like to go for a run with the Saturday running group at the Regatta, but this will remain fluid until Friday night. Happy Training

Ha ha, I have visions of the dog trying to bury that fitball after you tormented him/her with it :-)

My physio emphasises the importance of strengthening the muscles, not just stretching them so you are on to a good plan there.

I'm not commenting whether using those photos for weights is a good plan or not :-)

You on the couch, leg extensions (surely you were watching TV) inappropriate use of your wife's treasured photos - was this not a scene from 'Married with Children'

Seems like your well and truly on the road to recovery Al, er sorry, Shane. lol

Shane, I was thrilled to get your comment on my blog...thank you! Starting at a later age than most, might have something to do with still running at 3 score & 16! Anyone at all can do what I'm doing...just needs dedication, lots of hard work &, most of all...determination! So keep at it no matter what!

I wish you, your wife & expected baby a very happy 2006!
