Regatta Group Run

Today I went and done a run with the Running Buddies which runs weekly from the Regatta Hotel in the city. It was my first time there and not knowing anyone I always feel a bit awkward to begin with. When I arrived, Chris who was organising the groups came over and we had a bit of a chat and gave me a quick run down on how it all works.

I didn't know what I wanted to achieve today so when I heard what runs were on offer I decided to head off with the Mt Coot-tha runners. I enjoyed the run up there a few days ago, and thought I'd give it another go. The difference today however is that we ran from the city, a run that totals close to 15k.

There were 7 of us that left the Regatta to do this run, Hannah and Tracey had planned to partner up and ran together for the entire route, which is a great option. The remaining 5 of us stayed as a group until the first climb. Hill climbs tend to split the group up very quickly, which is what happened, however throughout the run we stopped a few times at various picnic area's for a drink and for the group to reform.

I still find the first 2k of the climb hard and towards the end I was struggling a bit, but it was an inprovement on Tuedays effort. Once at the top of the climb the run is undulating and the group remained fairly tight with Barry, Liz and myself running together with Rachel and Cheryl not far behind.

Coming down the otherside Liz and Cheryl peeled off to do an additional 3k with the rest of us continuing back to the Regatta. The last Km was done pretty quick with all three of us running between 3:40 - 3:50 pace. By the end I was glad to be finished and since my Jan 1 running debut this has been my longest run. It is also the end of my running week in which I have covered 41k, a distance I would normally struggle to achieve before my surgery. Joining running groups definitely increases motivation to train.

Today's total of 14.6km was completed in 1:15:40s slightly over 5min/k pace.

After the run I stayed at the Regatta for some breakfast and met alot of people, who seemed very nice, I just hope I can remember names next week as I enjoyed today and will go again.

Today 14.6k
Week 41k
Month 63.6k
YTD 63.6k

Great to see you enjoyed your first time out there today Shane. For sure it is like one big family and we have a great time running and being social together.

I hope you continue on your road to recovery and do many more group runs with us. But make sure you don't overdo the 'comeback' too quickly. Nothing worse than injury as I am sure you know.

I think by the time you have built up to come run with Tesso and I (as in ready for the mileage) you will be way to fast for us!!

3:40 that is just insane :)

Glad you enjoyed the run with the group Shane, you picked a tough one to do first up!

But it sure is easier training in a group. Not only do I find I run further, but my pace is quicker. When I run on my own I tend to get a little lazy.

Oh, and once you've learnt everybody's names you can tell me who they all are ;-)

I envy you Brisbane runners for having these groups that do the Cootha run. Sounds like it was fun. :)
