Holy Moly

Today - 10k
Month - 25k
YTD - 25k

Little Sam and I headed to BRRC for the first race of the year. It is always a 10k event where you are not allowed to wear a watch and you have to estimate your time. The person who gets the closest to their nominated time wins the day.

I wasn't sure how Sam would go, I have run around the neighbourhood in his other everyday pram with no other people and he seemed to enjoy it. I was hoping he was not going to throw a tanty half way round as Cass wasn't around this morning to save me, however to my delight he was great and really enjoyed looking at the rowers and the bikes around the Brisbane river.

I wasn't sure what I was capable of with a pram, I know it is alot tougher so I really didn't give it too much thought and just wrote down 45 mins. The day was really steamy early on and for the first time in a few weeks we had blue skies and the sun was beaming. I knew this meant a tough run especially down the exposed back section of the course.

Today the club had over 100 people turn up which meant a crowded start making it difficult to get a clear run from the onset. I got caught up for the first 200m before weaving my way through the others and quickly settled into a pace that would later prove to be a little too quick.

I am not sure of the 5k split but it felt like it would of been around 4.30 pace. The start of the second lap was where I started losing speed, the legs were tired from pushing the pram and it remained a battle to keep them turning over. I had to slow a few times which I didn't mind at all to help Sam get his drink and at about the 7k mark he decided he didn't want his book anymore and chucked it out of the pram which of course I had to stop and pick up.

The last km I tried to pick up speed, Sam kept looking up at me with a look that said why are you doing this to yourself, I think he thought I was dying or something which wasn't far from the truth. The ever so slight increase in speed seemed to work as I pulled away from the runner that was close by, I was expecting him to sprint past in the last 200m but it didn't happen.

I finished in 17th spot but didn't find out my time. I saw Tesso and she asked how I went and I said probably around 47 mins but wasn't sure. After the presentations I asked for my time and they told me 46.56, so I was way off with my initial estimate, but pretty good for my second guess :-)

So what did I learn from this experience, firstly Sam need to go on a diet to make it easier for his Dad :-) Secondly it was a good reality check, I ran a low 41 min 10k there 3 weeks ago fairly comfortably and sometimes have a tendency to become lazy when I am close to where I want to be. So hopefully this will ensure that I don't become slack and continue to work hard at my training

I've never pushed a pram running before but I've seen a heap do it. It must be like running with a ballast of 5 kg or more.

47 mins, not bad for a 10 k'er pushing a pram.

Steve is right. And don't forget how humid it was, it slows you down a tad. Everybody seemed to underestimate their time.

Sam sure was having a ball out there looking around at everything, bet he can't wait to go again. You may have created a monster :-)

46 mins is awesome for 10kms & puhing Sammy in the pram, took me 48mins to walk 5kms yesterday with just a crazy dog... but i'm fat & way unfit.

Phew, that was close. 45 would have seen you near my recent best for 10k.

You should tell yourself you want to be close to 35 minutes for 10k - that should cure the laziness ;)

Hey, if Sam had finished reading the book, you didn't have to pick it up!

Hey Shane

Welcome back and thanks for your recent comments. Hope this year goes well for you and your family.

I reckon you have a lot of potential, now you just have to string together a half a year or so of consistent/injury free running and you'll give Sam a hell of a time to beat when he grows up.

Have a good year mate.

Stay in contact.
