An ode to Lleyton Hewitt, sometimes over past past few years he has been frustrating to watch but the match he played against Baghdatis was awesome. I didn't watch it all live this morning but when i returned home from BRRC there was a replay of the match on Fox sports. Hopfully it is not the case but I think he will be beaten in the next round. We will see.
Anyway back to the more important stuff........
I decided during the week that I wasn't going to compete in the club championships which was a 14km event but rather focus on the shorter event the 7km. Not only is this event shorter but more importantly I got to sleep in an extra 1/2 hour :-)
I managed a warmup before the event which is rare and felt pretty good. I do need new shoes though which are starting to lose all comfort, support and are starting to give me blisters.
The race started at 6.30am and started off more conservative than usual. My aim was to go sub 28mins for the 7km. In about 6 position at the 1km mark I passed the marker in 4.05 so a little too conservative and stepped the pace up.
I could see that the group of 4 in front of me were slowing and I ended up catching them by the 2km marker. I passed this marker in 7.47 which I was happy about as it gave me some seconds up my sleeve if I did slow and clock a 4+ min km.
My splits didn't really improve from there on and I pretty much maintained spot on 4 min/k pace. I didn't feel fantastic during the last 5k and there was no hope of catching the front runner who was out of sight by the 5k mark. I just concentrated on maintaining my 2nd place and keeping below 4min/k pace.
Thankfully both eventuated I held down 2nd spot and stopped the clock at 27.49. I would have wanted this time to be a little easier than what it felt this morning but you get that sometimes.
Race Splits
1k - 4.05
2k - 3.42 (7.47)
3k - 3.58 (11.45)
4k - 4.01 (15.46)
5k - 3.59 (19.45)
6k - 4.01 (23.46)
7k - 4.03 (27.49)

Congratulations on the bling. Fantastic result!!
2nd spot, can't complain about that. I've never been at the pointy end of any race.
Well done! Its not easy for you guys to podium finish at BRRC, the competition is very fierce.
Great minds think alike - I'd always go for the extra 1/2 hour sleep (but I don't call a 6.30am start sleeping in).
Good race Shane. It would have felt easier if it wasn't 35C with 90% humidity ;)
