I have returned.....

Week - 0k
Month - 55.5
YTD - 576.5

From Gladstone. The weekend was good quite tiring with alot of late nights. I didn't even contemplate going for a run besides thursday night with the Gladstone Road runners.

*REWIND*
Thursday night as I said in the previous post I had found the run group and they were running 2 races a 2k and a 5k which is handicapped. When I arrived I registered and they asked my time for 1k which I thought was quite strange especially for a 5k run. I assumed that they wanted to know what sort of pace per km I would run for 5k so I said under 4 mins.

The announcements started first where I was introduced as being a visitor from Brisbane and then they told us the course which I had no idea what they were talking about. They then began the front markers, we all had numbers given to us and all these numbers kept being called and I was still standing there. Looking around the numbers kept dwindling, then they called up the 2k runners which is not handicapped and they started their run. At this stage I was a little concerned, there were 4 people left and I thought I will be next but no the next two went. I was left standing at the start line with a speedy looking bloke not knowing where I was going.

We set off 1 minute behind the second last group and all I was thinking is I hope this guy takes it easy and doesn't leave me behind. It would have been easy to see if the group was run in the morning but the run started at 5.45pm so I couldn't see 10 feet in front of me.

It turns out that the bloke I was running with is doing the GC marathon, and while we were running he was having a conversion with me. Myself I on the other hand was having difficulties just breathing let alone chatting. We started fairly moderate but slowly increased the pace until the 2k mark where I slowed a little. From this stage I knew where I was going and remained behind him for the majority of the run. I think he eased up so I didn't get lost because he stayed about three metres in front of me and didn't pull away.

I increased the pace towards the end and drew level with the guy and crossed the line together. To my suprise the time was nothing flash. I think that it must have been a little over 4k maybe 4.2k but it didn't matter. The time was 14.59 and we never caught anyone the whole run. I later found out that the front markers went off 9 mins in front of us, that is a huge distance for a 4k run.

After the race I chatted with the guy for a bit and he is aiming to run 2.50 - 2.55, last year he ran 3.04 so I can now pretty much assume he was taking it easy and waiting for me in that run :)

Today I think I might go and purchase some new shoes. I hate spending money on these but they are a necessity. I have ran over 550k in the ones I have which I bought in Feb, so almost 5 mths. I am thinking mizuno or adidas not sure, I think I will stay clear of asics, everytime I get a pair I seem to be injured not long after.

OOOOH new shoes! How exciting. With the injuries in mind it might be worth getting some properly fitted. I wear Mizuno for speedwork and Brooks for longer runs. But everyone has different feet and require different stuff from their shoes.

Ha ha, they obviously thought you were a big gun from Brissie. And you are! 14:59 for 4.2k is very impressive. You'll have to race a 5k soon and see what you can come up with.
