Kurrawa 2 Duranbah

I got through it is one piece today, I am somewhat tight but very suprised as to how good I am feeling, I was expecting a grim afternoon.

Anyway we didn't hang around for too long after the event, the early morning start and the hot day in the car for my pit crew takes it toll. I wanted to get back so Cass can get a power nap in before going to work. I will catch up with some of the Brisbanites probably at Mt Nebo later in month.

As I said in the last post I got the first leg, 5am start with great weather, towards the end of the stint I found it rather hot but alot easier than last years 2nd leg. Prior to the run I had a good breakfast which I feel helped alot throughout the race as I only had 1/4 of a banana and a few sips of powerade to see me through.

With no idea what I was capable of I set off at a easy pace, I remained relaxed and was sort of shuffling, keeping the feet low to the ground. I found this help in keeping the legs from conking out too early however they did give up around the 18 -19 k mark. From there onto the finish I done the walk / run thing, I didn't want to but I had nothing left and after a 30 sec walk I could set out at a decent pace for 5 minutes or so until I needed to rest again.

It seemed to work, and with about 40k of training in the last month, I managed to bet last years time by 6.30 crossing the change over point in around 2.02.30

My partner set off a cracking pace and by the time I hopped back into the car and drove looking for him he had already covered 6k. By about the 15k mark the heat was taking it's toll but he battled on and continued to run fairly strong. He has been training well for this event but not much prepares you for a 25k run in the heat. He wanted sub 1.50 but managed 1.53.48 which means that our total time for the event came under 4 hrs, at around 3.57.

We are pretty happy with result as we beat last years time by around 14 minutes, hopefully we will be able to run this again next year with both of us achieving sub 2hrs.

Great run Shane! You must be so happy with that.

I can't believe I didn't get to talk to you, I had to zip off quickly post race to shower etc before our 11am hotel checkout and then by the time I got back you had left.

Glad you're back blogging again Shane. 2.02.30 is amazing. You'd go sub-1:50 if you trained ;)
