Coolest Day EVER!

I am proud to announce that we had a BOY. He was born at 1:41 pm weighed 3.3kg (7lb 5 ounces) and was 52cm in length.

I will start from the beginning, we arrived at the hospital at 11 and checked in, not long after doing the admin did the anesthetist arrive. He was pretty cool and very straight to the point, basically he said that the risks involved with doing the epidural with Cass's blood condition is far too high. He said and I am not exaggerating, if bleeding occurs around the spine the best case scenario would be paralysis.

In saying that we obviously agreed to the General, Cass was wheeled in, I wasn't allowed to go so I stayed in the room. It would have been no more than 30 minutes later that the midwife came down and got me. I was pretty nervous by this stage, I was walking through the ward to get to the operating theatre when all these thoughts came rushing through my head. I was worried about Cass, how she went, worried about the baby, I know it sounds horrible but I was concerned as to how I would react if there was something wrong with him. My heart was pounding pretty hard and my head was hurting from thinking too much, I took a deep breath calmed myself down and walked through the doors.

Immediately, I heard him crying, he wasn't happy at all, being naked in a cold room after living in warmth and comfort for 9 mths would have been quite a shock for him. I reached the incubator and it was amazing, he was 4 minutes old when I got there and immediately I was asked to help the Doc do the measurements. I got to touch him straight away however he didn't want a piece of me he was still pretty angry. He looked great, nice and healthy and red all over. He also had alot of the vernix still on him which is a coating that is on him when he is in the womb for protection from the fluid. It is crazy when you look at their feet and hands how they are all blue in colour, it looks as though they are extremely cold, however it is just the circulation beginning and they pink up after a while. Chameleon like :)

The nurse had taken my digital camera in for the surgery and got some pics of all the stuff Cass and I missed which was great. I also brought the video camera up and began filming, at this stage Cass was still asleep.

About ten minutes later we were on our way to the room, when we arrived Cass's mum and step dad had just got to the hospital and they checked him out. I then got to bath him and wrap him up and nurse him for the first time which was good, it is so amazing how small and intricate his features are.

We arrived back in the room about ten minutes later, we were told that the surgery went great and Cass was fine. The baby had settled by this stage and was asleep. Cass arrived not long after which was a special moment he was about an hour old by this stage, the nurses didn't tell her what the sex was even though we had a good idea there is nothing like confirmation. I handed him too her and she was immediately overwhelmed with excitement and began to cry, then her mum started followed by the midwife. It was a great moment and one I will never forget, seeing Cass nurse our child for the first time.

I must admit for me it still didn't seem real that I was going to be parent, even up to today. It sure has hit home now and what an incredible experience. How amazing does it feel knowing that you have just created another human being. It is something that you cant explain, I never really got what the fuss was all about.........until today.

I will now officially introduce him to you all, his name - Samuel Patrick Lewis

There will be pics in the next post, hopefully tomorrow afternoon I will get a chance.

Thanks so much for the text message and for sharing such a wonderful wonderful story.

Congratulations to the both of you and enjoy all those overwhelming, glorious emotions you are going through. It doesn't happen every day so make sure you take time out to remember the emotions and events so you will be able to recall them in years to come.

My son is a Sam too! I was going to call him Sam Patrick after my brother Francis Patrick but then on the day choose to go with Sam Francis.

I am glad to hear that everything went well and that Cass is doing well. Can't wait to see the first Coolrunning Queenslander baby out there in his blue and yellow at the next race.

And what a great name. My dad was Samuel (and believe it or not his middle name was Francis too just like Clairie's son). Its always been one of my favourite boys names. Hell, its my favourite!!!

I can't wait to see some pics. Give him a little cuddle for me :-) And give Cass a big cuddle from me :-)
