Arriving home from work I was in no mood to do the chores that need to be done around the house, mainly the front lawn. Instead I opted to prepare tea and go for a run. Another 5k on the agenda this time back on the hard stuff and another increase in pace.
It was about 5pm before I had started to get my gear organised and set off. The afternoon had really heated up so this was perfect time to head out. I was searching for my shoes when I realised I had left them at work, both pairs! and the only other runners I had where my flogged out Asics.
I was all keen by this stage so I decided to put them on and do what I had planned. The first few metres when pretty ordinary, the cushioning was about as good as a set of double pluggers from woolies.
I planned to do the 5k in 22.30 so a solid training run. I was a bit sceptical about the cardio but I seemed to handle it without a problem. The cycling and swimming must be doing something I guess.
Throughout the run my right leg never felt good, not so much the hip but the whole upper leg in general. I wasn't in any pain just somewhat unsettling. I reached the 2.5k mark in 11 min and returned in 11.12 making the 5k run in 22.12.
I think that my body is still not ready to begin training, I will lay off again for a bit and stay on the softer stuff aswell. I know the shoes wouldn't have helped but I don't think it was the cause of the discomfort. Right now I need to face reality and focus on recovery rather than getting excited about events. As much as it hurts I think that Kurruwa is now 50/50, I won't even bother about searching for a partner, the odds on letting that person down is far too great.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Maybe it was the worn out shoes?
What is the key lesson we learnt here? KEEP A PAIR AT HOME.
Ok telling off is over. Don't give up on Kurrawa, but don't fret over it either. You can actually get paired up on the day - quite a few do this. Also if you don't make it , it won't be the end of the world - there is always next year and really cool races like Warwick to train for.
Just get better!
What Clairie said ... :-)
How's the lurgy by the way?
I really think you should stick to easy running only til this thing blows over.....
R2B
yep - take care of yourself shane... glad that the cardio fitness is still there - now to fix that pesky leg...
Reading of your dilemma reminds me of one of the difficulties of coming back from injury - not being confident enough to set some goal event in place.
The sensible thing to do (although many runners aren't sensible), is to get the training to a point where you're happy with it before committing to events.
Good luck!
